  • Hashab Gum (Acacia senegal): Predominantly found in regions like Kordofan, Hashab is prized for its superior emulsifying properties and is the most sought-after grade of Gum Arabic (E414) globally.

Talha Gum (Acacia seyal): Found in areas such as Blue Nile, Gedaref, and Kassala, Talha gum offers different functional properties and is also a vital part of the market. PA Sudan focuses on sourcing from regions like Kassala for its strategic proximity to Port Sudan and the resilience of its communities.

Traditional Harvesting, Global Impact

  • The harvesting of Gum Arabic (E414) is a traditional, labor-intensive process, typically undertaken manually by millions of Sudanese farmers and collectors. Small incisions are made in the tree bark, allowing the sap to exude and harden into amber-colored “tears” or lumps, which are then collected and dried. This activity often takes place during the dry season, providing a crucial source of income and livelihood for rural communities when other agricultural activities are limited.

A Lifeline for Millions

Approximately 5 million Sudanese people (more than 10% of the country’s population) are directly or indirectly dependent on Gum Arabic (E414) for their livelihoods.
